| In response to a need to assemble a concert sound system and stage - on a baseball field - immediately after a game - as fast as possible - we created our stage and speaker carts. | |
The
event that started this process is called "Safe
at Home" and is produced by the Scott
Dawson Evangelistic Association. The Safe at Home event includes
Christian Music, testimonies, and an evangelistic message.

Our very cool stage is a 3-axle trailer with a 16' x 24' deck on top. The downstage 4' and upstage 4' fold up onto the main 8' section, making a 24 x 8 for highway travel. There is a 4' x 8' deck on the back for amps, monitor console, etc. |
| The speaker carts are 4' x 7' carts with wagon style axles and handle. They are light weight yet strong. This simple design allows us to use most any style of speaker. Our system is a JBL small line array on top of 2 x 18" subs. We have also used d&b c4's and b2's. | |
With 1 or 2 pushers and one "driver" any PA system can be in place in minutes. |
| There are 3 separate pieces used as stage risers across the upstage. Each section is an 8' x 8' riser. When completely assembled, the stage is 24' x 24' with the "upstage 8' " slightly elevated. The main stage area is 4' high, while the riser section is 5' high. | |
| The stage and sound system are set up outside the field for sound checks. After sound checks are completed, the downstage 4' folds up vertically and pins in place. This allows the main stage to fit through the gate and enter the field. The riser sections break apart and travel separately. | |
| Many volunteers are trained to handle the task of getting all of this gear on the field - safely, orderly, and quickly. | |
As
the game enters the final innings, all of the gear is lined up at the
gate, ready to enter the field.
Once
the last out is made, things happen quickly. The stage sections and speaker
carts go to their positions on the field.
| We are very careful with the fields, we do not allow the speaker carts or the stage touch the grass. Plywood is used to make a path from the warning track to the inifield dirt, protecting the grass. | |
The
upstage risers are the largest piece that is transported by man-power.
The riser carts are a
6' x 7' cart with big tires. There are 2, 4 x 8 decks on top to make an 8 x 8 riser. They are big, but easy to move. We use sand bags to keep drum stands and other gear stable. |
The FOH mix position is also on carts .... the console, FOH snake, and amplifiers are all on the FOH carts. These 3 carts are connected together and pulled by a "gator" or small tractor. We can use a small trailer for FOH if needed. We typically use another small tractor or truck to pull a large generator out to the FOH area. We can use house power if it is available. |
Once
all of the gear is on the field, a few quick connections and the PA is
up and running !
We have had the PA running in less than 3 minutes from the last out. The Stage is usually ready for a band within 12 minutes from the last out. Fast setup times help to hold the crowd and keep the show moving. |
